Magri Williams completed the full renovation and rear extension of a four-storey Victorian townhouse in Stoke Newington, London. Acting as both architect and interior designer, the studio reconfigured the lower ground floor to improve natural light, strengthen the connection to the garden, and create a calm, considered family home.

The rear extension is designed around a rectangular planter, creating a green outlook from the kitchen and dining area. Light microcement is used across the walls and floors, forming a seamless backdrop to the planting and helping to blur the threshold between inside and out.

Nature plays an important role in the design. Positioned close to the extension, the feature planter creates a natural focal point from within the house, while its colours sit quietly against the neutral tones of the interior. As light filters through the foliage, soft shadows move across the microcement, adding depth and variation throughout the day.

Natural light was carefully considered throughout the project. Two semi-circular rooflights introduce shifting patterns of light and shadow, while the overhanging roof and textured microcement bring a sense of depth to the space.

A restrained material palette of microcement, oak and marble brings warmth, texture and continuity to the home. On the lower ground floor, microcement links the kitchen, utility room, dining area and children’s playroom, creating a durable and seamless surface suited to family life. This finish continues externally, reinforcing the visual connection between the interior and garden.

On the upper floors, light oak, marble and traditional detailing create a softer, more refined atmosphere. These materials sit carefully within the existing Victorian townhouse, balancing the character of the original building with a more contemporary approach to family living.

A series of bespoke elements were designed throughout the house, each tailored to the family’s needs. Outside, a built-in bench faces the feature planter, creating a quiet place to sit close to the garden. Inside, an oversized marble island forms the central gathering point of the kitchen, while a sculptural marble sink in the en-suite, a custom fireplace and TV unit, and a bespoke fabric headboard add carefully crafted moments throughout the home.

The project was delivered through close collaboration with skilled makers and craftspeople, including JK Construction, Bath Bespoke, Profile Plastering, Microcement Aesthetic and Blue Engineering.
